We'd like to share a bit about Breanna and what she is doing here in Saskatoon. We asked her a few key questions and she was gracious enough to share her answers with us.

Here are her responses:

  1. Tell us who you are!

My name is Breanna Kateri Doucette-Garr, I am from English River First Nation, and I am the owner and creative director behind Brekateri Photography.

  1. What is your business/page about?

My business is BreKateri Photography and I am currently on Facebook and Instagram! I created BreKateri Photography as a way of taking back my life. It’s about taking actions and not being afraid of what people will think. As BreKateri Photography grows and (hopefully) flourishes, I want my photography s to always have a feeling of strength and classic, natural beauty.

  1. What is your mission?

My mission right now and I say right now because it will change many, many times, is to empower and inspire others to get out and live the lives they dream of.

BreKateri Photography is only in the beginning phase and so are my skills. I know that I love photography and the feeling of getting that one photo that makes me gasp is the reason why I love photography.

My ultimate mission is to be a great photographer and work with as many people as I can. I love the idea of capturing photographs of elders and hearing their stories. Our elders have so many untold stories, mainly because a lot of young people don’t know their language and live in urban centers. Learning my language and living amongst my elders would be the first of many stepping stones in regaining the culture that I lost. I say lost because I have lived in Saskatoon my whole life, but that is another story.

  1. Who inspires you to do what you do?

Where do I begin? There are so many inspirational people out there! I guess I will begin with what inspired me to start my business. I got an invite to the very first RedDress event held by Devon Fiddler of SheNative and Vanessa Schellenberg of RedDress Transformations. I almost didn’t make the event and was about half of an hour late! I am so happy that I made it, because I ended up attending every event afterwards. I felt empowered and inspired being around all these woman that wanted to change their lives.

BreKateri Photography was created, because I wanted to also “change my life” for the better. As a young Indigenous woman I was looking for different ways find myself emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and yes, even physically. Self-love people. Anyways, my dad just so happened to have a DLSR sitting in his basement and it dawned on me. What is the one thing that I have admired and loved my whole life? Photography. I thought this is what I will do! It was meant to be. There are no coincidences in life my friends!

Another amazing woman that has inspired me is Tenille Campbell of Sweetmoon Photography. Now let me tell you about Tenille people, she is one crazy cousin and she is also incredibly successful with her photography business! Can I be you when I grow up? Seriously though, this woman exudes confidence, is an amazing writer, and if that isn’t enough she’s also hilarious! She’s one badass chick.

There are tons of inspirational people in Saskatoon! The best thing that I did, that inspired me to start creating beauty in my life, was asking someone that inspired me to go for coffee. Yup, just a simple coffee. I initially went to hear their story and she ended up wanting to hear my story as well. Which let me tell you felt really amazing! Being able to tell my story to someone that I looked up to was incredible. It helped me get past my social anxiety and fear of being judged!

I guess that one thing that inspires me daily is I always remind myself to be kind to everyone because you don’t know what a person may be going through.
